Fr. Ted Taheny, 86, died on Friday, August 12, 2011, in Regis Infirmary, Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. He was a Jesuit for 67 years, a priest for 55 years.
After his ordination to the priesthood in 1956 and the completion of his studies Ted began his ministry as a Jesuit priest. His service can roughly be divided into two parts: 21 years as a teacher and administrator at the University of San Francisco and 24 years as the director of foreign missions for the California Jesuits. In his role as Mission Director he provided invaluable aid and support to California Jesuits working in various missions throughout Asia and Central and South America. Throughout his priestly life Ted also served as a chaplain to the Knights of Columbus. Ted's failing health brought him to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in 2006. Ted was a gentle and caring man who, in spite of declining health, always greeted you with a smile and kind word.
Fr. Ted Taheny is survived by his Jesuit brother Fr. Bob Taheny of Los Gatos, and his nephews Michael Taheny of Santa Clara and Fr. Mark Taheny of Greenbrae.
Fr. Ted Taheny's funeral Mass will take place on Friday, August 19 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, 300 College Ave., Los Gatos, CA 95030. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln St., Santa Clara, CA 95050.
