Tributes for

Lassas, Heimer A.

Lassas, Heimer A., passed away peacefully in his Buena Park home of more than 40 years on April 3, 2012. He was born in Kronoby Finland in 1917 and was proud to be a naturalized American citizen. He was a seaman in his youth, even working on a commercial sailing ship. In World War II as a U.S. Merchant Marine he served on troop ships around the globe and was once torpeoed. Preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, the former Verna Vogt, he is survived by his present wife, Lilia Ortega; her children, Lila Boza, Raul Ortega and Jennifer Bruton and their families. He was stepfather for over 55 years to Robert Shanahan and Joan McGinley and loving "Grampa" to their children and those of stepsons, Joseph and Patrick Shanahan, who predeceased him. Heimer was a lifetime member of the Buena Park Senior Club, sharing the fun of trips and cruises with both Lila and Verna. He traveled extensively in his motor home. In any locale he was always ready for a game of Pinochle, winning consistently though usually remarking in his heavy Swedish-Finn accent as he surveyed his cards, "I got nothing." Services will be held Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. at Rose Hills Hillside Chapel, Gate 17.
