Callahan, Darothy

Darothy Callahan passed peacefully in the presence of loved ones on Wednesday May 25th, 2017. Darothy, the eldest of 8 children was born on January 25, 1929 in Nashville, AR to Millard and Zara Wakefield. Most of her childhood was spent in Texas until the Wakefield family relocated to Arizona in 1942. At the age of 16 while working as a waitress Darothy met and soon after married her husband of 63 years, Clifford Callahan on December 27, 1945. In 1949 the newlyweds established roots in Sacramento, CA where they raised 5 children, 2 grandchildren, and served as foster parents to 96 infants over a 10 year period. After a short stint as a housekeeper at St. Robert's Parish, Darothy embarked on a 27 year career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Together Darothy and Clifford created a legacy consisting of: 5 children, 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren. Darothy was truly the Matriarch of the Callahan Clan. Throughout her life Darothy enjoyed reading, singing, traveling, hosting family get-togethers, helping those in need and most of all spoiling her pets. Generosity and hospitality were her mantra. She will be remembered most of all for her remarkable memory; rarely forgetting a name, date, or event. Quick witted until her last breath, she will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have called her sister, mom, grandma, aunt, cousin or friend. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Thursday June 1, 2017 at East Lawn Elk Grove. Viewing and visitation will be held on Wednesday May 31, 2017 from 4pm-8pm at East Lawn Elk Grove.
