Ashie, Gabriel

Ashie, V. Rev. Gabriel M., passed away on Oct. 25, 2014 in Orange, CA from complications due to cancer. He was 80. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he moved to Los Angeles in 1949 and was a resident of Orange County since 1965. In 1955, Father Gabriel graduated from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles and St. Vladimir Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York, NY in 1958. He helped establish two Orthodox Christian Churches: St. Anthony in Englewood, NJ and St. Luke in Garden Grove, CA. Father Gabriel was also founding chairman of the Program for Pastoral Care at Anaheim Memorial Hospital, where he facilitated an Orthodox Christian chapel. He also served many years as President of the Los Angeles High School Alumni Assoc. (W'52). Father Gabriel leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Matushka Helen; children, Clifford and June Ashie, Dr. James and Regina Roum, George Ashie, Antony Ashie, George and Christina Younes; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Services: Wed., Oct. 29: Trisagion and viewing at 6:00 PM and Priest Funeral Service at 7:00 PM at St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Anaheim. Thurs., Oct. 30: Divine Liturgy at 9:00 AM and Funeral Service at 10:00 AM at St. John with Burial at Santa Ana Cemetery. Mercy Meal to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Father Gabriel M. Ashie Scholarship Fund at St. Vladimir Orthodox Theological Seminary.
