Yonekura, Akira, 89, of Huntington Beach, passed away on Monday, September 30th. He died peacefully after a brief bout with cancer. He was a native Californian, born in Hollywood. He spent most of his younger years in Chula Vista, California and attended Sweet Water High School. He was sent to the Poston (Arizona) and Crystal City (Texas) relocation camps, before joining the Army where he served in Japan, Korea, Hawaii, California and the Pentagon. He was a Sergeant Major when he retired after 20 years of service in 1968, but retired as an officer, based on a war time commission. He also retired from Xerox in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Mildred of 64 years; his children, Steven (Jadyne) Yonekura, Stanton Yonekura, Stuart Yonekura and Stephanie Yonekura; and his grandchildren, Deena Yonekura, Jared Yonekura, Sydnie Yonekura, Mika McCaffrey and Jake McCaffrey; and his sister, Kiko Takashima.
Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, October 26th, 3pm at The Los Alamitos Naval Base chapel.
