Pulizzano , C.J. "Mel"

Pulizzano, C.J. "Mel" entered into rest on Friday, May 18, 2012 at the age of 95 surrounded by his loving family. Carmello James was born January 28, 1917 to James and Emma Pulizzano. Mel was the eldest of five sons, brothers Charles and David predeceased him. He attended St. Brigid's grammar school and graduated from Sacred Heart College Preparatory, Class of 1938 in San Francisco. He was the recipient of the distinguished Lasallian Vincentian Alumni Award in 2010. Mel was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. He completed medical and Parachutist training and became a medic in the 82nd Airborne, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was decorated with both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mel entered the San Francisco Police Department in 1950 and retired after 27 years as Sergeant. He was awarded the Silver Medal of Valor in 1955. Mel was a Lifetime Member of the San Francisco Elks Lodge #3 and served as Exalted Ruler from 1983-84. Mel is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara, his cherished children, Michael Pulizzano, Melinda Pulizzano-Moorley (Philip), Mitchell Pulizzano (Hortencia), adored grandfather of Michael Miller (Deborah), Lisa Pulizzano, Paul Pulizzano and his precious great-grandson, Zachary James Miller. Mel sadly leaves behind two brothers, Joseph and George Pulizzano as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Mel will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his zest for life. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012 at Star of the Sea Church, 4420 Geary Blvd., SF, a Rosary Vigil at 3:00pm and Funeral Mass at 4:00pm. Celebration of his life will be held in the School Auditorium following the Mass. On Tuesday, May 29, 2012, procession to the committal will begin at 1:00pm from McAvoy O'Hara Mortuary, 4545 Geary Blvd., SF and interment will be 2:00 pm at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Old Mission Rd., Colma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, 1055 Ellis St., SF, CA or to the VA Medical Center, Hospice & Palliative Care Dept., 4150 Clement St., SF, CA.
