Tributes for

Mitchell, Dorothy

Dorothy Mae King Mitchell passed away February 29, 2016 in Orange, CA, surrounded by her loving family. Born January 2, 1920, in Santa Barbara, CA, she was the only child of Frank Charles King and Clara Marie Nelson King. In 1942, she married Eugene Weldon Mitchell in Las Vegas with whom she had three children: Melinda Mitchell Guinaldo, Stephen P. Mitchell, and Michael A. Mitchell, all of Orange County.

Dorothy was a beautician before her marriage then resumed her business following her divorce to support her children and maintain the family home in Garden Grove where she lived from 1953 until 2010. After it became an empty nest, she embarked upon a successful real estate career that allowed her to travel the world with old friends and new. Filled with joie de vivre, Dorothy danced to Glen Miller, body surfed in Long Beach, attended every event of the 1984 Olympics in L.A., and eagerly embraced all that life had to offer, and that included exemplary community service. She was longtime recording secretary of Garden Grove Republican Women, plus fashion show chair and other leadership roles at GGUMC. That work and many others earned her the Silver Spoon Award from G.G. Chamber of Commerce.

Dorothy leaves behind her children, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her memorial service will be held Friday, March 11, 11:00 AM at Garden Grove United Methodist Church, 12741 Main Street, Garden Grove, with reception to follow in Acker Hall. In lieu of flowers, and in remembrance of her love of music, memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund at the Church.
