Tributes for

Johnson, Stellita

Stellita Johnson, IHM, (Sister Stellita Marie) died peacefully on June 21, at age 92 at the Immaculate Heart Community Residence in Los Angeles, surrounded by her sisters in community. She had been a member of the Community for 74 years. Born on May 31, 1924, in Los Angeles to Carl and Katherine Johnson, she is survived by her sisters, Clara Johnson, IHM and LaVerne Cuccia; her brother, Reynold, pre-deceased her. After graduating from Bishop Conaty High School, Stellita entered the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart with her sister, Clara, in 1942. They were the first group to make their novitiate at the newly acquired property in Montecito. She earned her degrees and credentials as an administrator and supervisor from Immaculate Heart College and served as teacher and principal at many IHM schools in Lancaster, Fresno, Visalia, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles. Stellita taught in Glendale public schools for 16 years and participated in ministries of the Church of the Incarnation in Glendale as Eucharistic minister and as a member of the Christian Service Committee, visiting the sick in hospitals and convalescent hospitals, leading prayer services, and entertaining residents. At the Brand Library she took painting classes, and today her seascapes and still life are on display at the IHM Residence. As a member of the Immaculate Heart Community, Stellita, with Clara, hosted their prayer group and participated on Community committees. Their email, csjohnson, designates their close relationship; they lived together in Glendale, where Stellita always had dinner ready for Clara on her arrival from work. Fulfilling Stellita's desire to live with the IHM Community, they moved with their cat to the IHM Residence, joyfully sharing in the prayer life and activities of the Community. Clara remembers Stellita as always "cool, calm, collected." She was a quiet prayerful presence in community, accepting all with respect and graciousness and will be remembered for her hospitality and for being gentle, happy, and cheerful. Days before her death, a group of Community members sang "Salve Regina," at her bedside, and she joined them in singing the hymn that welcomed her into heaven two days later. Her final smile signaled her entry into eternal life. Survivors include her sisters, Clara Johnson, IHM and LaVerne Cuccia, niece Kay Uller (Kevin), and many other nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. The memorial Mass to celebrate Stellita's life will be on Thursday, July 14, at 11:00 a.m. in the Mortuary Chapel, Calvary Cemetery, 4201 Whittier Blvd., Los Angeles 90023. In memory of Stellita Johnson, IHM, donations may be made to Immaculate Heart Community, 5515 Franklin Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90028. Donations may also be designated for the IHM Residence.
