Tributes for

Chen, Jack

Chen, Jack, was born in Taipei, Taiwan on November 1, 1973 and died on March 22, 2013 in a tragic surfing accident. He is survived by his loving wife, Joni Doherty, and their two sons, Nicholas (10) and Andrew (9) Chen, his sister Mary Chen, and his parents Michael and Sherry Chen. He came to America at the age of 8, and assimilated rapidly, but maintained fluency in Mandarin Chinese. He attended Savannah High School in Anaheim, and earned his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. He then went on to medical school at the University of Southern California (USC). After gaining exceptional marks during his orthopedic residency at USC from 1999-2004, he then excelled at the University of Miami in a spine fellowship in 2004-2005. He attained his dream job at the Orthopedic Specialty Institute in Orange, CA in 2005 and was promoted to partner in the group in 2007. He was an active member of the Orange County Medical Society, the American Association of Orthopedic Surgery, and the National Association of Spine Surgery. In addition to his professional successes, Jack also dedicated his resources to several charities, including the Thomas House, Life Rolls On, Surfrider Foundation, Heal the Bay, Cancer for College, and the Water Project. Jack lived life with a passion, and loved surfing, snowboarding, playing guitar, drawing, painting, art, teaching, reading, eating good food, traveling, and spending time with his family. His nature was to bestow knowledge, generosity, love, and compassion to everyone he encountered. A memorial service will be held on April 4, 2013, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. Anyone who wants to attend is welcomed.
