Tributes for

Horowitz, Edward

Horowitz M.D., Edward Alan, September 20, 1950 - June 22, 2014 Ed was an associate professor of medicine at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He was a practicing physician specializing in infectious diseases and internal medicine. Ed was taken suddenly as a result of a traffic incident in which he was a pedestrian while walking in downtown Omaha, and he never regained consciousness. Ed was a prominent and beloved mainstay in Omaha, and his colleagues, students, patients and many friends are deeply saddened at his passing. Ed was a graduate of Creighton Medical School in 1978, and his outstanding achievements and potential impelled the school to ask him to remain and become a resident, then chief of residence, and a fellow and a professor. His selfless dedication to his profession and his community made him a beloved person. Ed was devoted to the Creighton University Medical School Magis Clinic, which provides free services for homeless and uninsured people. Ed supervised the medical staffing of the Magis Clinic. Ed was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended public schools, including Inglewood High School. He graduated with honors from U.C.L.A and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa scholarship society and Honors Math Society. Ed's interests were his passions, which included classical music, reading, playing tennis and cooking. He had a great sense of humor, and he prominently displayed a photo of comedian Groucho Marx on his office desk. Every day he would complete the New York Times crossword puzzle. Ed would travel often to attend medical conferences and give lectures. Ed loved classical music and especially opera, and he would often be accompanied by his younger brother Arthur who lives in Washington, D.C. Ed visited his family and friends in Los Angeles at least twice a year, always bringing books or other items as gifts. Ed's knowledge was wide and astounding, and his modest, gentle and affable manner endeared him to all who knew and met him. The only word that could describe Ed is the word "unique." Ed is survived by his father and mother, Dr. and Mrs. Clarence William (Bill) and Rosalie Horowitz; brothers Melvin, Arthur and Leslie (Diane); nephews Joshua and Daniel; Uncle Robert (Eleanor) Horowitz; Aunt Barbara Horowitz; Cousins Douglas Horowitz, Steven (Melinda) Horowitz, Patricia Kim (Daniel) Toll, Cindy (Ricky) Mintz, Thomas (Peggy) Horowitz, Marjorie (Dale) Bonar; and numerous cousins. Donations in his memory may be made to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha Nebraska. Funeral services and burial will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Park, Los Angeles, California.
