Martin, Esther Cooke

Martin, Esther Cooke, 95, went to the Lord on January 7th, 2013. Born on January 17, 1917 in El Centro, CA, she was the daughter of Ed and Esther Cooke. Esther was the first born of twins, but her twin sister, Margaret died of dyptheria at the age of 9. Esther was the oldest of 8 siblings, Margaret, Lucille, Gertrude, Pauline, Laura, Charles and Henry. She attended local schools in El Centro until she enrolled in junior college in Brawley and then transferred to UCLA, where she studied art and teaching. She became a proud member of the Theta Phi Alpha sorority, where she served as president and received their highest honor. "The Guard of Honor," She married Jim Martin and moved to Chicago, where she lived for 24 years. In 1972, she returned to California and settled in Tustin. Along with being a member and serving as president of the Tustin Book Club, she enjoyed art, painting, playing cards and especially attending parties. She is survived by her three children, Robert D. Martin, Barbara A Hoerner and Marilyn L. Dement; 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. There will be a Visitation at Saddleback Chapel on Friday, January 18th from 4-8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, January 19th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Cecilia Church in Tustin. She was dearly loved by all and will be greatly missed.
