Cohen, Shirley A.

Cohen, Shirley A., long-time resident of Santa Ana, passed away September 10, 2011 from complications of diabetes and kidney disease. She was at home, lovingly cared for by her family.

She married Daniel C. Cohen in Rochester, New York. They moved to California in the 50's. Dan passed away in 1983.

Shirley left her mark on the community as an activist and volunteer. Her involvement included PTA president, League of Women Voters, member of the Orange County Grand Jury, Founder and Director of Feedback Foundation from 1967 until 1999, Special Advisor to the Conference on Aging in Washington D.C. She formed the first Adult Day Care Centers in Orange County. She was awarded numerous citations including the Orange County Outstanding Woman Award and the Santa Ana Exceptional Citizen Award. She was a unique and exceptional woman who made a difference in the world.

She is survived by her two sons, James Cohen and his wife, Karla of Glendale, California and Thomas Cohen and his wife, Gini of Santa Ana, California, and her sister, Adelaide Weinberg and her husband, Robert of Rochester, New York.

The funeral will be held Friday, September 16, 2011 at Fairhaven Cemetery in Santa Ana at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Community SeniorServ, Inc.
