Balestrieri, Steven

Steven G. Balestrieri
April 4, 1923 - February 19, 2016
Passed away peacefully on Friday, February 19, 2016, surrounded by his family and his loving wife of 63 years. Steve was born on April 4, 1923, the last of four children of Salvatore and Antonina Balestrieri. Devoted husband to Frances. Loving father to Nina (John) Warda and Steve (Anna Marie) Balestrieri. Adored Nonno to Christopher (Nicole), Gina (Kelechi), Anne and John III. Soon to be "Bisnonno" to a precious baby boy. Loving brother of the late Ignatius (Anna), Mario (Mary) and Rose (Jimmy) Silvestri. Loving son-in-law of the late Giovanni and Anna Machi. Beloved brother-in-law to Joseph and Yolanda Machi. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Steve will be greatly missed by all those blessed to have known him, whose only consolation now is that he is at peace.

A native of North Beach, he attended Saints Peter & Paul, Sacred Heart Cathedral and earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. He played and coached many years in San Francisco semi-pro baseball. He worked diligently for Shell Oil Company and later as Laboratory Director of the California Bay Area Air Quality Control District where he retired.

He was a devoted parishioner of the Church of the Epiphany for over 54 years and served in many parish organizations. During his years in the parish, he served as President/Chair of the following organizations: Finance Council, Parish Council, Men's Club and Holy Name Society and Co-Founder with Monsignor Bruce Dreier of the Over 50 Club. He was an usher and was instrumental in developing the Epiphany Girls Sports Program. He was inducted into the Epiphany Hall of Fame in 2013. He also served as President of the Presentation High School Father's Club.

The Balestrieri family cannot express enough gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Lester Jacobson, Dr. Avraham Giannini and Dr. Gordon Lundy, and the love, care and respect of all of his caregivers, especially Ericson Laulita, who was our devoted Angel.

Friends may visit on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016 at Church of the Epiphany, 827 Vienna St. at Amazon Ave. SF, starting at 9:30am, where a Rosary Service will be held at 10:30am, followed by the celebration of the Funeral Mass at 11:00am. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, 300 Lake Street, San Francisco, CA 94118.
