Shinoda, Douglas Martin

Doug Shinoda passed away suddenly on February 1, 2017. Doug was born on December 26, 1960, in Los Angeles to James and Alice Shinoda and resided in Tustin for 50 years. Doug met his wife, Judy (Sharf), in Tustin during middle school. They both attended Foothill High School, where Doug played basketball. After graduating from UCLA, Doug returned to Tustin with Judy to raise their two children, Blake and Blair, who also graduated from FHS.

Doug’s most important role was as a beloved husband, father, and uncle. He dedicated himself to his family, and his love will continue to envelop and protect his wife and children. He instilled strength, honesty, generosity, and faithfulness in his children, Blake and Blair.

Doug worked as a Commercial Real Estate Broker for 30 years while also finding time to coach girls’ basketball. His kindness was felt on and off basketball courts throughout Orange County, where he excelled at developing young athletes’ skills and, more importantly, character. Doug mentored hundreds of students teaching the values of commitment, integrity, and respect.

Doug touched many lives in his 56 years. His warm personality and genuine concern for others helped him effortlessly cultivate deep relationships throughout the community. Doug not only formed deep friendships with his family and peers, but also their children. Doug was proud of his Japanese American heritage, family history, and family business. Doug also loved to fish, having taken many fishing trips over the years with his friends.

Doug will be greatly missed by all of the lives that he has touched. And there are many.

Doug is survived by his wife of 32 years, Judy; son, Blake; daughter, Blair; sister, Dawn Schirmer (John); sister, Deborah Stocker; brother, Mark (Bambi); brother, Tom; eldest nephew, James Kusuda, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents James and Alice Shinoda.

A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 13922 Prospect Avenue in Santa Ana on Friday, February 10 at 11:00 am.
