Brian Howard Simpson Born October 5th, 1932 in Los Angeles, California, passed away peacefully January 17th, 2012 in his home city of Walnut Creek, California. He was 79. A graduate of Stanford University in 1954, Brian subsequently served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves for 2 years as a 1st Lieutenant. He completed his law degree at USC in 1959. After 25 years as an Attorney Examiner for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) his title was changed to Trial Counsel in 1981. In 1983 he was appointed as a U.S. Immigration Judge serving in San Francisco, California. He was well respected and admired by his fellow judges and the private bar as a brilliant legal scholar and a fair, but firm, judge. He mentored and inspired young lawyers and judges with his extensive experience. Brian retired in 2009 having devoted more than 50 years of service to the U.S. Department of Justice. Brian loved traveling with his wife, reading, gardening, and visiting with friends and family. He had an enviable talent for getting the very best out of life, and seeing the humor in life's difficulties. He often created smiles with family and friends over an evening martini. He was and remains very loved by his surviving family; his wife of 57 years, Diane Virginia Thias Simpson, sister Claudia Salquist, his second son Allan Simpson, and his grandchildren Heather, Chelsea, and Benjamin Simpson.
