Tributes for

Hart, John "Jack"

John G. Hart
August 14, 1931-February 20, 2016
John Gerald "Jack" Hart passed away peacefully at home in San Francisco, California. Beloved husband of Heather McLeod Hart for 39 years, cherished father to Jack (Ananda) and the late Gerry Hart, adored grandfather to Quinn Hart, dear brother in law to James McLeod, and dear cousin to many throughout County Mayo, Ireland.

Jack was raised in Noe Valley and attended Most Holy Redeemer and St. Philip's schools. He graduated Class of 1950 from Sacred Heart High School. After an Air Force tour in Korea where he was shot and narrowly escaped death several times, Jack returned to SF where he was a wagon driver with the San Francisco Police Department and later a proud motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol. After being seriously injured by a drunk driver on the Bay Bridge, Jack honorably retired from the CHP and went back to school. He received an engineering degree from the University of California at Berkeley and rose through the ranks to become the Assistant Superintendent of the San Francisco Department of Public Work's Bureau of Street and Sewer Repair.

All throughout his life, Jack enjoyed being a part of many social clubs. He was a founding member of the Hi Flyers club and a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. He greatly enjoyed going to luncheons at the Immaculate Conception Church, the Apostleship of the Sea, at the Hitchin' Post with the retired Teamsters, and at Spenger's and Bertolucci's with the CHP retirees.

While Jack enjoyed socializing at these luncheons, his love for cooking brought him into the kitchen. For decades, and for hundreds of people at a time, he cooked his signature St. Patrick's Day dish: corned beef and cabbage.

Beyond these and many more personal and professional accomplishments, he will probably be remembered most for his "gift of gab," his amazing storytelling, and charming Irish wit.

Friends may call on Wednesday, February 24th, after 3:30 pm at DUGGAN'S FUNERAL SERVICE, 3434-17th St. and after 5:30 pm at St. Philip's Church, Diamond and Elizabeth Streets, San Francisco, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm, and the Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 25th, 10:00 am, Committal Holy Cross Cemetery.

In celebration of his life and reunion in Heaven with his beloved son Gerry, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The ARC San Francisco, 1500 Howard Street, SF, CA. 94103.
